Teresa Regil, a local Radford artist, displays her paintings of “A Painted Portrait of a Beloved. A Family Heirloom.” at Glencoe Mansion: Museum & Gallery from Oct. 6 to Dec. 4, according to a Tuesday press release from Scott Gardner, the Glencoe Mansion: Museum & Gallery executive director.

“Teresa Regil discovered her passion for painting almost by accident after many years of being a mother, entrepreneur, and dentist,” wrote the press release. “She realized she had an ability, a talent, to draw the likeness of her favorite subjects: her family members.”

Regil is also donating a painting to the museum’s silent auction.

The painting is a master copy of her work inspired by John Singer Sargent, an American expatriate artist and considered, as written in the 1998 book with his same name, the “leading portrait painter of his generation” for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury.

Bidding for the painting will start for the show’s duration, and Glencoe Mansion will pick a winner Dec. 4.

According to the press release, “[Regil,] born in Mexico City, and retired from a long career as a pediatric dentist in Maryland, [Regil] is now established in Radford as a happy Abuela (grandmother) and portrait artist. Self-taught, guided by masters such as John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt, she creates her portraits in oil and incorporates a myriad of techniques, including alla prima, indirect approach, and mixed media. Often her backgrounds are made with acrylics and the main subject or figure with oil.”

Entry into the Glencoe Mansion: Museum & Gallery at 600 Unruh Dr., Radford, VA 24141, is free and can be reached by phone at 540-731-5031 or by email at info@glencoemuseum.org. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday from 1 – 4 p.m., and is closed Sunday.
